Can I use NordVPN for Japan Netflix?

How to Hide My VPN From Netflix

Can I use NordVPN for Japan Netflix?

To be frank, I haven’t tried using NordVPN to connect to a server in Japan. But because I’m curious I’ll try it while writing this blog post.

I have NordVPN for my Windows setup and my iPhone. Before I go through the process, you can jump to the conclusion in the next paragraph.

Can I use NordVPN for Japan Netflix? Japanese Netflix entertainment options can be accessed using NordVPN. This is don by connecting to Japanese VPN servers through NordVPN’s server list. Netflix does not block NordVPN to allow streaming for Japan’s media options.

Ok that’s the gist of it, but if you’re curious on the setup keep reading. As I’ve just quickly did a test to see what options are currently available on Netflix.

Netflix via USA

From the screenshot below, you can tell I’m currently connected to to the United States:

When I open up Netflix, I have my usual shows. I know that Netflix will change it up for the most part if they don’t brand it or own the entertainment options.

So I’ll mention the first few options I see from “Popular on Netflix” and “Trending Now” that are branded with the Netflix logo.

As of the time of this writing, this is what I see on “Popular on Netflix”:

  • Criminal United Kingdom
  • Enola Holmes
  • Jack Whitehall Travels with my Father

And here’s what I see from “Trending Now”:

  • Cobra Kai
  • Signs

  • Black Spot

I figured I would mention what Netflix serves me to see first, as these are the ones likely not to go away over time.

And as you can tell on the “Trending Now” list I had to scroll a bit to the write because there were some movies in between that were not branded with the Netflix logo.

My phone is currently connected to NordVPN USA servers. The first media options I see are similar.

From my mobile device’s “Trending Now” list here’s what I get:

  • Enola Holmes
  • Cobra Kai
  • Away

From the “Popular on Netflix” I see:

  • The American Barbecue Showdon
  • The Gift
  • Santa Clara Diet

Netflix via Japan

Now that I’ve set the baseline of what is available for the USA, I’ll connect to the Japanese servers to see what’s possible.

Okay, so here you can see the process of connecting to the Japanese VPN server that Netflix has:

After connecting to the Japanese servers that NordVPN has, I’ll then need to refresh my Netflix page.

I now see a significantly different selection of media available. For instance the header for the Japanese option is a Korean movie called “The Witch.”

I quickly went back to my phone to see if this was available on the USA version, since I hadn’t made the switch to Japanese servers on that yet. I found that this movie was clearly not available.

As far as the branded Netflix options on the “Popular on Netflix” and “Trending Now List” this also varied. But looked familiar from the shows that what I have seen in the USA.

From the Desktop version, this is what’s Netflix branded and “Popular on Netflix”:

  • Enola Holmes
  • Criminal United Kingdom
  • Record of Youth (Korean TV)

From the “Trending Now” List:

  • Ghost Wars
  • Glitch
  • The Mist

This should obviously be similar to the mobile version. So I won’t bother mentioning the list I’ll see. But I can see that Japan VPN for Netflix Mobile does stream just fine.

Other things I’ve noticed on connecting NordVPN to Japan’s Netflix are:

  • Has plenty more audio and subtitle options for the Asian world, particularly Japan and Korea.
  • Netflix’s version of clickbait movie posters have more titles written with a Japanese overlay.
  • Some movies do not have English subtitles, such as “The Witch” mentioned above.

If you’re looking to improve on learning Japanese as a language, this would be a great option. If you’re a fan of Japanese media this will also be a plus.

Finally, I can’t complete this article without listing out what anime is currently available. So to anime fans reading, you’re welcome.

I searched anime on the Japanese Netflix and found this current anime list:

  • Kakegurui
  • A Silent Voice
  • Sword Art Online
  • Naruto
  • Baki
  • Bleach
  • Castlevania
  • Avatar The Last Airbender
  • One Piece
  • Angel Beats!
  • Devil Man Crybaby
  • Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
  • 7 Seeds
  • And More!
